Finn Juhl Interior
at the Vigdís Institute

in Reykjavik

A festive ceremony during April marked the initiation of The World – Vigdís’ House, which is Reykjavik’s International Center for Language and Intercultural Understanding. The brand-new institute is dedicated to promoting knowledge of foreign languages and aims to encourage greater understanding between cultures.

The Purpose of the Building

The building is drawn by the architects Haraldur Örn Jónsson and Kristján Garðarson. The new building at the university’s campus has been dubbed Veröldhus Vigdís (The World – Vigdís House) and is home to conference rooms, lecture halls and research labs. Furthermore, the building boasts a room featuring an exhibition dedicated to Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, a former president of Iceland.

Sculptural Furniture in a Dynamic House

The exhibition is masterfully executed and sets the stage for a dynamic house in which Finn Juhl’s sculptural furniture blends in perfectly. Architect Kristján Garðarson tells that the goal has been to connect activities across the house in the same way that languages connect people.
