The Chieftain Footstool | Finn Juhl | 1953

This footrest was made for the iconic Chieftain Chair, one of Finn Juhl’s absolute masterpieces. Today the Chieftain Chair is perceived as one of the most important exponents of the Danish Modern movement in the US during the 1950s. For this reason, Finn Juhl is often considered the father of Danish Modern. Like the Chieftain Chair, the Chieftain Footstool is manufactured in walnut or oak and upholstered in leather.

Inspired by modern art, the Chieftain Chair with its organic shapes, liberated itself from traditional Danish furniture design and strict functionalism in both shape, construction and materials.

Both the Chieftain Chair, Sofa and Footstool are manufactured in walnut or oak and are upholstered in leather.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE

Finn Juhl's Life and Work

Like other modernist pioneers, Finn Juhl started from scratch without role models or inherited restrictions. He designed by measuring his own body and analyzing how the individual components of the chair should carry the human body. But contrary to his modernist contemporaries, with their streamlined, scaffolding-like structures, Finn Juhl aimed at a more organic and natural form.

Production and Craftsmanship

We want to continue to shed light upon the great amount of work that goes into producing each and every piece of Finn Juhl's sculptural furniture. It is crucial that the details must be as fine and pure as if it came from the old cabinetmakers’ workshop, but our understanding of quality also includes durability. The furniture has to be so durable that the pieces can be enjoyed by people today and by generations to come. PROTECTING THE LEGACY

Our Approach

In 2001 we, Ivan Hansen and Hans Henrik Sørensen, were officially trusted with all the exclusive rights to manufacture and relaunch Finn Juhl’s sculptural and iconic furniture by Finn Juhl’s widow Hanne Wilhelm Hansen. Today the unique Finn Juhl collection consists of more than 50 classic masterpieces, all of which we manufacture with the utmost respect for the original heritage and strict demands for quality.
