Design in Detail
The year 1948 marked a period where Finn Juhl was particularly focused on decoration through subtle and thoughtfully executed details. It was during this time that designs such as the Silver Table, the Whisky Chair, and the Art Collector’s Table came into being — distinctive and extravagant pieces that, beyond their costly production, reflected Finn Juhl’s ambition to integrate free, abstract art into the world of interior design.
The Silver Table was originally crafted by master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in Brazilian rosewood for the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1948. Later, it was produced in two additional wood combinations, featuring a darker tabletop with a lighter frame. This elegant oval table, suited for dining or conference settings, can be extended with two additional leaves – all while the frame remains fixed in place.
The Delicate Details of the Silver Table
The Silver Table and the Egyptian Chair were not originally designed as a set, but Finn Juhl paired them as dining chair and table in the dining room of his own house in Ordrup.
The tabletop features 30 sterling silver inlays — 42 when fully extended — which inspired its nickname, the Judas Table. These fine inlays, scattered across the surface like a blanket of stars, lend the piece both its classic elegance and extravagant character.
The positioning of the silver is far from arbitrary. In addition to being decorative, the inlays function as subtle seating indicators for 4, 6, 8, or 10 guests. With two extension leaves, the table comfortably accommodates up to 14.
