A Sanctuary of Calm by the Fjord

A former sanatorium on Kolding Fjord has been transformed into an exclusive hotel, where historic architecture, scenic surroundings and timeless furniture by Finn Juhl create an atmosphere of tranquillity, contemplation and wellbeing.

With its waterfront location on Kolding Fjord and 28 hectares of protected woodland surrounding the property, Hotel Koldingfjord offers an exceptional connection to nature. The historic buildings were originally constructed as a Christmas Seal Sanatorium for children. The project was funded in part through a Danish Christmas seal tradition, in which people purchasing Christmas seals to place alongside postage stamps helped raise money for the construction of sanatoriums for children. Hotel Koldingfjord was the first of its kind in Denmark.

Completed in 1911, the buildings served as a sanatorium for children suffering from tuberculosis from 1911 to 1960, playing an important role in the fight against the feared disease. The sanatorium was expanded in 1917 and again in 1933, when two additional buildings, Fjordglimt and Granly, were added to accommodate the youngest children.

Over time, the need for the sanatorium diminished, and the buildings stood vacant for several years. Eventually, a company acquired the property and undertook the restoration of the listed building, whose architecture draws inspiration from the Rococo and Renaissance periods. The restoration was carried out with the assistance of architects Vilhelm Lauritzen and Jørgen Stærmose. In 1990, the property opened its doors as a hotel and conference center.

With its exceptional views across the fjord, charming historic buildings, and access to woodland trails, a bathing jetty, and expansive green spaces, Hotel Koldingfjord is an ideal destination for relaxation, reflection, and nature experiences.

The historic buildings of Granly and Fjordglimt are home to 20 distinctive hotel rooms and apartments furnished with Danish furniture design by Finn Juhl. Each space has its own character, bringing together the furniture designer’s sculptural aesthetic, the distinctive architecture of the buildings, and the tranquil surroundings of the fjord.

Here, Danish design, architecture, and nature come together in a harmonious experience where aesthetics and a sense of connection take center stage.
